Mercenaries’ Real Life Counterpart

2005’s Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction chose to ignore the ever-popular action of the middle east and focus on our next most likely world threat; North Korea. As a hired gun it’s up to you to choose who you ally with and who you piss off in a theatre set around North and South Korea as well as parts of China.

Though the game didn’t attempt a photorealistic recreation of real world cities, several buildings including the Ryugyong Hotel did appear in the game. Livejournal member chronovore pointed out the startling recreation after a recent post to the Urban_Decay community which had photos and a brief history of the remarkable building.

Of course, Pandemic took a few liberties in the game, turning the abandoned hotel into a military stronghold which you — unlike the real North Korean government — get to disassemble.
