Secret Titles Revealed in Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection

PRE-UPDATE: How very LOST of me to be posting a flashforward update to a post I never made in the first place? Actually, I meant to post this weeks ago but it got lost in drafts and Sega updated the info today so here’s the majority of the original thing with the new bits stuck in at the end.

Sega has been repackaging and rereleasing several of its famed 16-bit franchises for well over ten years at this point. From the Saturn to Xbox Live Arcade, Sega has kept its flagship titles on tap but never before have they bundled up so many in one package as Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection.

And it’s about time too. With the massive disc space afforded by the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, you could easily store the entire Genesis library several times over, but due to the astronomical legal wrangling required to pull that off, we’re getting just over 40 first-party titles.

All the games are being retouched to look decent at 720p resolution and the rest of the disc is brimming with promotional videos and accompanying artwork; there’s even an Achievement/Trophy for viewing it all. Multiplayer options remain intact for individual games but sadly there’s no online mode so you’ll have to get your friends in the same room to play. It’s a shame but it holds true to the 16-bit era’s lack of broadband powered, always-on, internet connections so it’s begrudgingly understandable.

Sega’s been pretty misery with their game collections in the past, charging up to $50 for only a handful of retro games, but they’re loosening their money-grubbing fingers this time and releasing Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection for the totally reasonable price of $29.95. There was some confusion over the game’s release date but Sega’s finally cleared that up so look for both versions to hit store shelves the week of February 10th. Check after the jump for the incredible list of games including the newly-revealed arcade classics!
