Games in mirror appear closer than they are

Calling Max and the Magic Marker a ‘Johnny come lately‘ isn’t appropriate in the slightest but I think the ‘come lately‘ part nails how I feel. The indie effort first hit WiiWare in 2010 and though it’s clever mix of 2D platforming and DIY doodling caught my attention I was done waggling with the Wii by then. It has since made its way to PC, Mac and iOS and will soon hit the Nintendo DS, Windows Phone 7 and PlayStation 3.

With today’s Move-infused PS3 announcement I realized that Max always seems to be in my rearview. By the time it made it to iOS I was long since burnt out on virtual buttons. My DS hasn’t been charged in nearly a year. Any desire I had to get into PlayStation Move and its limited lineup was extinguished before I even saw the hardware in person.

What Max needs to do is take his Magic Marker and jump onto PlayStation Vita. As a downloadable launch game for a new piece of hardware I think things would fall into place for me to finally appreciate this game that’s always been in my side mirror. Have you ever found yourself uprooted from a console by the time a game you were looking forward to was finally released? I can’t think of another instance where things played out this way.
