Learn the language of your choice with this week’s Humble Bundle

022715-bundle

It’s not every day you can spend as little as a dollar to start learning a new language but today (or any of the next seven) is that day. The latest Humble Weekly Bundle features a bunch of games that are “Made in Japan”. Naturally, that includes bullet hell shooters, visual novels and turn-based strategy but it also includes InFluent.

I first found InFluent among the IGF entries this year and it’s got an interesting hook. Rather than sitting you in front of still images and memorizing flash cards, InFluent lets you explore a colorful 3D environment and poke at hundreds of common objects to learn their spelling and pronunciation. It appeals to my illogical fascination with Walking Simulators and might actually make me a little smarter. Also, you eventually unlock a tiny spaceship and fly through the rooms blasting specified objects in a time attack mode. That’s my kind of learning!

Buying it through the Humble Bundle gets you the game and your choice of one language pack. I really appreciate that it isn’t just the typical German, French and Spanish like so many language apps. You can choose from: Japanese, French, English, Italian, German, Swedish, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Spanish, Russian, Bulgarian, Latin, European Portuguese, and Brazilian Portuguese. You can buy any of these languages as DLC for $4.99 a piece once you’ve mastered your first pick.

I’ll let you know if I learn any Korean from my time with InFluent but I may easily get distracted by Fairy Bloom Freesia that’s also in the bundle. I got the Cherry Tree High Complete Pack as well but I’m never going to touch that so to you who read all the way through this post, I have a gift.

Learn about fonts, play as a colon for less than $3

013015-bundle

Do you like fonts? I realize that’s a somewhat odd thing to ask in regards to a video game but if you do it’s worth checking out IndieRoyale’s new bundle this week. Type:Rider takes you on a pleasant walking tour of typographic history by way of a 2D platformer. You play as an animated colon → : ← so the momentum of movement sometimes sends you in directions you didn’t expect but it’s forgiving and interesting. It was a game I discovered in last year’s IGF and finally got to play through in 2014.

If that’s too lame the bundle also includes Raiden Legacy: The Return, a compilation of the top-down shooter’s early entries. And then there’s also eight more games, most of which I’m not very familiar with. All for $2.23, all redeemable on Steam and, heck, five of them even have trading cards to sell off.

Of 2014: The Bundle List

of2014-bundle

I don’t have a bundle problem! Ok, I might… a little, but I don’t think it’s as bad as it is for some folks. All told, this sprawling list of 117 games only cost me about $30. The really shameful part is that I only played the 25 highlighted games but I did give away a bunch of codes on the GameLuv Google+ page. In fact, there might still be some free codes tucked away in the list down below!

Of the ones I did play it was the Humble Japan Bundle that I was most pleased with. None of the three games (One Way Heroics, Unholy Heights, Gigantic Army) lasted terribly long but each was a fun experience I knew nothing about. I even posted about Gigantic Army, persuading readers to check it out before the bundle ended.

I was also happy to finally play Type:Rider which tells the oft-ignored history of typography and fonts through a mostly enjoyable 2D platformer. I got to check out The Bureau: XCOM Declassified which could’ve been on par with Mass Effect 2 if it hadn’t had so much trouble in development. I died over and over and over in the full version of Neo Scavenger, a game I’ve played the demo of countless times. And I finally got to dig into Prison Architect. It needs to be a complete game but what’s there is surprisingly fun to build and wrangle.

Game Music Bundle 8 is Launched! Go get it!

120414-musicbundle

Yes! Yes! Yes! The Game Music Bundle 8 is out and it includes one of my favorite soundtracks from 2012 that I have shamefully never bought. Once known as ‘Zombies.’ the game has since been rebranded as ‘Corporate Lifestyle Simulator’ and its soundtrack has swollen in the process. For as little as a dollar you’ll also get the soundtracks from The Sailor’s Dream, Gods Will Be Watching, Monsters Ate My Birthday Cake and Super Time Force.

For $10 you’ll get fourteen more soundtracks including FTL Advanced Edition, Lovely Planet, Majestic Nights, Double Fine’s Hack ‘n Slash and all the rest of those I don’t feel like typing out because I’m rocking out to “Zombies” right now.

For the love of SNES, go grab the Humble Weekly bundle!

081114-humblejapan

Hey you guys! Go and buy the Humble Weekly Bundle: Japan Edition right now and play Gigantic Army if nothing else! Created in the spirit of “Cybernator / Assault Suits Valken, Metal Warriors, and Front Mission: Gun Hazard” it has all the stuff that made me desperately want a SNES in the 90’s. Giant mech suits, guns with elaborate model numbers/codenames, huge sprites, giant explosions and a war with an overpowering alien race.

On Easy it’s about 35 minutes long but  it’s a fun nostalgic ride all the way and it leads to three extra difficulty modes that are sure to remind you of what those 90’s era SNES games were really like: brutal. The bundle also includes Unholy Heights, a fun little game that combines weird monsters, hotel management and some light strategic combat with a Katamari/Animal Crossing vibe. It’s one of the best bundles I’ve bought in a while and there’s even more stuff if you pay a little more. Check it out, T-minus 2 days and counting as of this post!
