Weight loss woes

Back in 2004 or 2005 Shawn and I counted calories religiously and lost a bunch of weight. I lost close to 40 lbs after being at my max weight of around 170 lbs. I’ve gone back up 10+ lbs, which is enough to make me uncomfortable. I’ve had to buy larger pants, feel too lumpy for some of my more fitting shirts. You may know the feeling? I’m trying to count calories again, but the recent trip out of town had me snacking and not counting. I’ve been going to the gym and walking or using the elliptical machines. Today I did some exercises from self.com and now I feel all wobbly. A few lunges and I have kicked my own ass.

It’s discouraging, but I’m trying to use it as fuel to get past this, rather than thinking it’s impossible. I just have a hard time figuring out what I should do. I have gathered that I should do cardio 3 days and strength 3 days, but what? Please comment suggestions & links!

I guess I didn’t really have much else to say about it. I’m just feeling frustrated by trying to get fit. Also it will be interesting to see how holiday eating goes as vegetarians. I never cared too much for turkey anyway, I’d have preferred chicken with all the sides instead. So how are things like Tofurky stuffed turkey thing or the fake turkey log thing I saw in the fake meat freezer section? Any recommendations on how to make this easier for the cooks who are worrying about fitting our diets in?

It’s frustrating, this whole weight loss thing. Best advice I have is to keep at it, and you’ll see the results. Don’t be surprised when other people notice before you do.

Have you tried the Quorn Turk’y Roast? It’s actually quite good, just be careful not to overcook it as it can get dry

We just tried the Quorn chicken (like) chunks in a lettuce wrap recipe. It’s very chickeny! Maybe we will try that. I want to buy one we can take with us to the meal.

I enjoy Tofurkey, but only this once a year. I rarely eat faux meat products with the exception of Morningstar’s sausage patties (because they are delicious oh god i love them — they’re also really great in sausage balls, and even carnivores are confused when I reveal that they are in fact meat-free). I think that it’s actually really easy to survive the holiday feasts as a vegetarian, but you do sometimes end up filling up on sides, most of which tend to be vegetarian by chance.

Tofurky specifically is pretty bland in nature, but I do enjoy have a big chewy hunk of pure protein on my plate. They beg for creative preparation and marinades, though. On the other hand, the wild rice stuffing in the middle is really, really good.

Have you tried SparkPeople.com to aid in your weight loss quest? It’s a very helpful site and it’s FREE! You can track calories and cardio on your own, or you can opt to let them design a program for you to follow. When I first joined I let them design my program and after I’d been at it for awhile I started choosing my own meals and what not. They do programs especially for vegetarians and vegans too.

I cannot recommend the site highly enough. You’ll get out of it what you put into it, of course, but it’s a great guideline and they give you all the tools to lose the weight and get fit and healthy. The rest is up to you. :)
