BUY!PLAY ~ The Art of Gaming Propaganda

BUY!PLAY ~ The Art of Gaming Propaganda ~Just to let you all know, I’ve started a new set on Flickr called BUY!PLAY ~ The Art of Gaming Propaganda. It’s a series I originally started to archive all the paper junk I’ve held onto for so many years before finally tossing it; another step in digitizing my possessions and decluttering my physical life. The benefit for you is that you get to see all these ancient ads and marketing mailers and articles written outside of the gaming world as I work through the piles. You can browse it all at any time over at Flickr but I’ll post various things here as well with this little footer image so you know right where it’s coming from.

Superman – The Man of Steel (2002)

The game may have sucked just as bad as Superman 64 but this ad was pretty clever, gluing a real air sickness bag to the page.

Alien Resurrection (1998)

I always appreciate at least a glimpse of the advertised product. But I remember the time leading up to the movie and the game’s release that excitement was high enough that iconic imagery was enough.

Starcraft Ghost: A ‘Ghost in the Machine’ Indeed

You wouldn’t think anything Starcraft related would ever get cancelled but here’s the proof to shoot you down just when all your friends thought you were such the Gaming Historian. Though it went through many revisions and a few developers’ hands, Ghost eventually wound up as vaporware after five years in the public eye between 2002 and 2006. Surprisingly, Blizzard doesn’t count it as officially cancelled and so the promise of Starcraft Ghost continues to tug at our heartstrings for years to come!  Read the full OXM article from August 2003 in PDF at Scribd and brush up on your Ghost history at Wikipedia.
