It’s Free! on PlayStation Store for March 28th

It’s Free! on PlayStation Store for March 28th

Welcome to the last week of March (already!) and another regularly scheduled update on PlayStation Store freebies. For March 28th there’s a demo of Hazelight’s A Way Out which has the rarely seen descriptor: “For 2-2 players”. It’s a co-op only experience so I’m sure the demo is there to give friends a chance to see how the split-screen, prison-break adventure game works.

Ubisoft has a free SHAREfactory theme for spicing up your Far Cry 5 clips, Trion is back with another Trove freebie for PlayStation Plus subscribers (the Blocky Bonus: Throne of Games) and NIS America is crowning the U.S. launch of The Witch and the Hundred Knight 2 with a plethora of free Day One weapons: Prophet’s LanceRed Lotus SwordOrochi StaffNihilist SpearSacrifice SpearSparkling Hammer.

It’s Free! on PlayStation Store for March 21st

There aren’t a ton of individual freebies for the week of March 21st but there are a surprising number of totally free games. The biggest of which is Hitman, returning with the Spring Pack that offers Episode 2: Sapienza free for a limited time. It includes the ‘World of Tomorrow’ campaign mission, Escalation Contracts, and access to Contracts Mode and future Elusive Targets in Sapienza.

Also free this week is Don’t Bite Me Bro, a compelling looking “open-world zombie apocalypse game with local co-op for up to four players”. What looked like yet another boring twin-stick shooter in screenshots turned out to be really interesting in video: there’s crafting, there’s resource gathering, there’s base defending. It’s been on itch.io for a while now but publisher Arcade Distillery has seen fit to bring it to PlayStation 4.

Our other free offering is a bit more dubious. I’ll let the description do the talking but see if you can decipher the clues to find out what kind of game Minefield is: “This is pretty simple game. It includes bombs, flags, and boxes. Do not detonate the bombs. Click boxes to open it. Put flags on the box if you believe there is a bomb there.” Got it, Minesweeper knock-off.

Moving on to free Add-Ons, Capcom is offering a Free Character Edit Voucher for Monster Hunter: World in case you’ve been yearning to remix your character’s appearance (including gender, the copy reads) after so long with the game. That peculiar racing game Gravel is also back with a free car to race around with, the Acciona.

And lastly there’s a pair of free static themes straight from Japan featuring Atelier Lydie & Suelle and Yakuza 6.

Bloomingdale’s Nintendo Collab Underwhelms and Overprices

Bloomingdale's Nintendo Collaboration Underwhelms and Overprices

Nintenclothes are back in the spotlight with a new collection, this time from Bloomingdale’s. First up, forgive me for being a dude who doesn’t pay more than $25 for a pair of pants when I say wow, these prices: $45 for a fannypack, $50 for an inflatable pool ring, and $200 for a short sleeved shirt. Even if I loved these designs I’d have to stick with appreciating them from afar, and that leads to my bigger concern.

Dana pointed out this collection to me and we both agreed there’s something low-rent about these high-end items. “It’s just pixels and shit” were her exact words, and I can’t deny it on most of these 82 items. I’ll give it to ‘em, they sure made a lot of stuff but some of these designs are barely on par with the fare you can find at Walmart: a pixel heart with the words “Game On” above it in script font, a shirt that simply says “Nice Play” with a heart in place of the ‘A’, and a sweatshirt with rainbow stripes on either side of the word “SUPER”.

P.S. If you bought all three of those you’d be at $385.

Elsewhere there are tops, bottoms, and accessories that barely evoke the concept of graphic design, nevermind a connection to video games or even Nintendo. Rainbow stripes, dual tone stripes, checkerboards, and polka dot patterns are lumped in here as “gamer wear” and priced up to $200. It isn’t all bad though, there a few items I really dig the look of.

Most of the short sleeved shirt patterns are simple but appreciable, with the Donkey Kong design being the most elaborate. These mushroom swim trunks are also pretty good and the black-and-white “camo” version is frantic and rad. The one thing I might actually have bought is this assortment of Sugarfina candies in Mario Cloud, Yoshi Egg, and Strawberry Mushroom varieties. Unfortunately they’re either sold out or include one of the fun animal-derived ingredients that I avoid.

These aren’t so bad… still, it’d be $282.

Personally, of all the unexpected fashion crossovers we’ve seen so far it was Uniqlo that hit the best balance of design and price. Take a look at my last roundup and let us know which was your favorite or if there’s a Bloomingdale’s piece you’re already adding to cart.

It’s Free! on PlayStation Store for March 14th

It’s a bit of a slow week for freebies, that is, unless you’re a fan of styyyyylish action! To celebrate the release of another Devil May Cry HD Collection, Capcom is giving away two DmC themes for PlayStation 4 in “Alright!” and “Cool!” varieties.

For PlayStation Plus subscribers there’s a pair of monthly top-up booster packs for both Dungeon Defenders 2 and 3on3 Freestyle. And free for everybody, Trove is back with another weapon style download, this time for the Wraithflame. Finally, there’s a new theme for N++, for some reason. It was released on PS4 in 2015 and it isn’t on sale. Not sure what’s up with that but, hey, a free theme for an old game is still free.

That Gravel demo didn’t turn out to be all that great. Kinda bland but kinda fun, the demo only gives you the snow level which is always my least favorite. It did have some choice, bad voiceover from the announcer though so there’s that much. This week doesn’t hold anything personally interesting but if you’re into farm simulators, Telltale adventure games, or Horizon: Zero Dawn, by all means, read on!

SOEDESCO’s farm simulator Real Farm is getting some new free bonuses this week including a whole new map (Grünes Tal), a whole new crop (Potatoes!), and a whole bunch of free avatars depicting various farm equipment. Telltale Games is trying to entice new players with some free trials of The Walking Dead: A New Frontier, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Minecraft Story Mode: Season 2. There are also new free booster packs for Happy Dungeons and Knights of Valor for PlayStation Plus subscribers.

It’s been just over a year since Horizon: Zero Dawn launched and Guerrilla is celebrating with a pack of free avatars and a free dynamic theme to decorate your PlayStation 4 with. Last but not least is Sprint Vector, the PSVR racing game with unique controls, that’s offering up another bunch of free avatars.
