E3: Natsume Takes PlayStation 3 and Wii Owners on a Photo Safari

Natsume, traditional publisher of all things farming with the evergreen Harvest Moon series, is branching out to a new kind of environment this year with two sun-drenched safari titles. Originally released in 2008 by Sony in Japan, Afrika on the PlayStation 3 has remained as elusive as a Liger on these shores but Natsume has finally wrangled in the rights and will be bringing the photorealistic photo safari to the U.S. this fall. I have personally been longing for this game for years; the idea of exploring the vast savannahs of Africa with nothing more than a camera sounds like a wonderful change of pace from the glut of gritty sci-fi shooters we’re currently trodding through.

Order Pizza, Sushi through your Wii, impress Mom

I’d mentioned this in a little rant I wrote a while back but thought I’d share a video of just how you go about ordering pizza, sushi, and more through your Wii. This is, of course, exclusive to Japan… for now. How quaint, you can even mark your favorite foods for quick ordering. Up next from Nintendo: WiiPages to replace your phone books, EncycloWiidia to replace that unreliable free information on the internet, and Wiit Germ, a Nintendo sanctioned nutrient supplement that you can add to your food when it arrives. Can. You. Please. Make. Some. GAMES!?!

You remember Youropa?

flipstwistedIt seems like it’s been a while since a quirky little indie game has come along, grabbed my interested, and then disappeared. Lately everything has made it to a release in one form or another so this is a little like picking open a nearly-healed wound. Above is one of the first screens from Flip’s Twisted World for the Wii from Majesco. It’ll be officially unveiled at E3 but the press release bills it as a gravity-defying, mind-bending puzzle platformer. It also appears to borrow heavily from Super Mario Galaxy but there’s another game that it reminds of, Youropa.

You remember Youropa, right? I posted about it nearly a year ago when it was shown off at Leipzig where its little floating worlds of Euro-themed villages and Bone-esque characters first warmed my heart. Since then development has gone mostly silent except for a YouTube channel that the team at frecle started nearly six months ago (which is where the videos after the cut come from).

What bums me out like its 2003 all over again is that this knock off Wii crap is probably getting fast tracked through development at Majesco while the superior stylings and compelling atmosphere of Youropa continues to fade into the darkness. I admit, I missed the YouTube videos months ago but I put in for a comment from frecle when I found them and, weeks later, have yet to hear anything back. I really hope it’s not a lost project and that news is waiting on the other side of E3. In the meantime, watch the videos below, cross your fingers, hold your breath, and pray that Flip isn’t our only option for some new puzzle platforming.

Punch your way through this week’s new releases

punchweek

It’s time to put down those fruity-colored controllers you’ve been fondling for years and start playing games the way humans were meant to play, by hitting things with their bare hands! Out this week are EA Sports Active and Punch-Out, both for the Wii and both featuring coverart that’s about to smack you upside the head! If you need a little convincing that you’re actually fighting King Hippo in Punch-Out, Everlast has some excessive boxing gloves they’d like to sell you, but if you just can’t force your limbs to mimic the on-screen actions of your chosen warrior there’s always UFC Undisputed to play on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. So stop shooting stuff already and punch something this week!
