Valve’s Portals melt my brain!

As if the gravity gun in Half-Life 2 weren’t innovative enough Valve unveiled an even more mind-boggling weapon last week at EA’s Summer event to be released with Half-Life 2: Episode 2.

Portals

The Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device lets you shoot two portals that are pan-dimensionally linked. It’s similar to the recently released Prey so the debate will smolder for years as to who had the idea first, but either way it’ll cook your brains. Mere words cannot explain it so just go watch the video and begin dreaming about the possibilities.

“We wanted to take physics out of this domain as a tool that lets you bounce grenades around to how can we really change the game experience for our customers,” said Valve head Gabe Newell.

Though initially thought to be a part of HL2: Episode 2 it has been confirmed that Portals will be a standalone game set in the Half-Life universe. Foregoing typical FPS action, Portals looks to be more focused on mind-melting puzzles, but I’m sure something bad will happen and we’ll end up teleporting into Ravenholm or something.

For what it’s worth, HL2: Episode 2 is scheduled for release this fall, but we all know that when Valve is involved you might as well finish up your doctorate study while waiting.
