Vying to rule China…again!
First off, doesn’t the new layout look great? Gren did it all! Good job!
Gren got us Dynasty Warriors 6 for Xbox 360 as a Valentine’s gift. awww, sweet isn’t it? If you don’t already know, DW is my favorite game series and I have been waiting for this one for a while.
As I play I go back and forth with my feelings towards the changes and improvements. First thing that angered me was before we even had the game. I read a list of the characters they had cut out of the game. My second favorite girl, Da Qiao, was gone. This wouldn’t be so bad, but her younger and more annoying sister, Xiao Qiao, remained. Then we had the game in our hands and Gren let me start the first game on my live account. I chose my favorite girl, Sun Shang Xiang, of course! Shang Xiang’s nickname is “tomboy princess” and even the wikipedia entry says “She is often depicted as a tomboy, as she received extensive martial arts training and her maidservants all wielded weapons, which was strange for her time.” In past games she reflects that image more, in my opinion. The new version has exposed cleavage, a new voice actor who sounds like she’s 4 years old, a silly costume that reminds me of a jester and a different weapon. The only benefit of her now being an archer rather than fighting with chakrams is now she has a ranged weapon. I’m not positive that’s a benefit though.
DW6 has a new battle method called renbu that I find difficult. There are grappling moves that I can never get to grab the right person. Everyone has a “Special” attack that is different depending on the character. This can be handy, but it seems more like another type of Musou attack. The combos seem to be gone, so I just end up mashing buttons. It seems like the raised the difficulty across the board. At first I was angry about that, but my new method keeps me from getting frustrated during a battle and in turn is making the game longer for me. When I get to a battle that keeps killing me, instead of starting over the same battle I begin a new game, select the same character (who will be built up a bit from the battles I was able to complete) and go from there. This way, by the time I get back to the impossible battle, I am twice as built up. I prefer my character to be able to kill the generals easier anyway!
The new method of building up the characters is really awesome! It reminds me of the method used in Final Fantasy X. The player can now slightly control what gets built up in what order. You want to be able to carry more than one “tome” for “special attacks”? Well then build the character up down this branch of powers… It’s pretty cool! I’m not very far into the game yet, but so far I think it just being new and on xbox 360 with achievements is enough to make me happy. I finished the Wu family as far as what I have unlocked and started Wei. I may have other comments later on, but for now that’s my opinion. Sorry no screen shots, but I am typing at work and game sites, where I could snag pictures, are blocked. ^_^
