The Uncharted “Half-Tuck” in Real Life
You may remember not so long ago that Doublefine Productions’ Tim Schafer posted on his blog about Nathan Drake’s half-tucked shirt from Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. Browsing through the paper today I couldn’t help notice several clothing ads with young guys sporting the exact same look! Has the game inspired a new fashion trend/faux pas? More like Schafer’s observation has sent the thought streaming out into the collective consciousness of the universe. Really, I believe in that stuff.
Anyways, I did a little Googling (on Blingo, because it’s been a while since I’ve won anything) and it looks like this goes back to 2003/2004 when office guys were pushing the boundaries of casual work attire. A New York Times article talks about the backs of polo shirts coming untucked in the office, a sort of waistline mullet that echoes that 80’s sentiment “business up front, party in the back”. Actually, that’s a terrible thing for the male waistline to be saying.
The article coins the movement as the half tuck but it’s not the Nathan Drake half-tuck (note the hyphen). It looks like this is either the evolution of men’s fashion or a twisted high-speed consciousness collision between geeky game design and uninspired fashion photography that road crews will have cleaned up by the time The Gap’s summer line debuts. Here’s hoping it’s the latter because that half-tuck looks sorta like you just got done in the restroom and forgot to fully tuck before you buckled your belt.
