E3 Impressions: Fat Princess (PlayStation Network)
There was once a Psygnosis game revealed at an E3 show long ago called Team Buddies. It mixed the comic action stylings of Worms with resource gathering, team combat, and a bright cartoony art design. I never did get to play it but looking at Fat Princess now makes me wonder if it could be a spiritual successor.
Slightly overshadowed by MAG’s 256-player online battles, Fat Princess still hold its own with two teams of up to 16 players going at it medieval battle royale style. The goal is to breach your enemy’s fortress, rescue your fat princess, and carry her back to your base. It sounds like capture the flag but there’s a bit more too it.
For starters, you’re able to scavenge resources on the battlefield and upgrade your weapons and castle defenses. Once you’ve stormed the enemy battlements and found your princess you’ll need multiple players working together to take her home. Fat Princess has five character classes as well but you’re not locked into any one of them once the round starts. Simply find an appealing hat lying around the world and instantly switch between “the fearless Warrior, the steadfast Archer, the mystical Mage, the tireless Worker, and the deadly Priest.”
Ten maps are promised in the initial offering for both single and multiplayer but it’s not hard to see many more being released as downloadable content later on. A few modes are also on offer including Thwart the Invasion, Medieval Games, and the titular Save the Princess. There’s also extensive character customization so you don’t get lost in the crowd of 31 other players. There’s no release date yet and all the screenshots read ‘Work in Progress’ so I’m gonna assume we have a while to go before this Fat Princess starts singing. See a couple more shots after the cut.
