Nintendo and Konami Cause Rift in Time!

“Many women want to maintain forever young and beautiful skin,” Konami said in a statement.

Perhaps this seems almost commonplace in today’s ever broadening world of software design but it’s another example of something I’ve been thinking about lately. First of all, this quote comes from an Associated Press news article about Dream Skincare, a DS title jointly developed by Nintendo and Konami to catch the attention (and money) of females in Japan. Plug in some information and the software helps you track your aging epidermis while doling out health tips and meal plans. Now, let’s go back to that quote.

“Many women want to maintain forever young and beautiful skin,” Konami said in a statement.

I’ve been thinking lately how bizarre our gaming industry would look if you could sneak a peek at it from ten years ago. Imagine reading that quote in 1997 just after finishing Metal Gear Solid for the first time. Konami concerned about womens’ skin? Ok, time to get back into Star Trek fanfiction.

Loading up the Project Sylpheed demo yesterday I wondered how I would react to seeing Square’s and Enix’s names together on a 3D shooter. Actually, that one still boggles the mind. Of course, there’s the ‘Sonic vs. Mario at the 2008 Beijing Olympics’ that would surely have caused an immediate aneurysmic burst in my brain. Or maybe that would’ve happened anyways from gaining the ability to see ten years into the future.

Any other gaming headlines that would melt your brain ten years ago?
