Club Nintendo dishing out Special Rewards to Heavy Buyers
Well look at that! I accomplished something I didn’t even know I was striving for, and aren’t those the best successes anyways? Nintendo wrote today to let me (and presumably a gajillion other Wii owners) know that I’ve spent enough money on Nintendo products in a short enough amount of time to receive an imaginary rank to go alongside my imaginary stash of coins. Who said Nintendo wasn’t down with meta social rankings a la Gamerscore?
There is one tangible benefit to all this, at some point this year I’ll receive a “Special Reward” in the form of some Nintendo branded tchotchke that I can stash in a box and look at every once in a while as I wait for its Rarity Points to level up to eBay status. Or, ya know, I might use it depending on what it ends up being.
Meanwhile, back at Club Nintendo, a special note has been added to my account informing me that “as part of the Club Nintendo year end, your Elite Status Coin total has been reset. Coins earned between July 1st 2009 through June 30th 2010 will count towards next year’s Elite Status Special Reward!“. Damn Nintendo, that’s cold! You don’t just reset someone’s status, even if they’re not aware of it in the first place. Maybe I don’t want a platform-wide social ranking system designed by Nintendo. For now it looks like it’s back to punching in codes and taking gameplay surveys to rank up for 2010.
