Hands On: Nintendo DS Opera Browser Part 1
The DS looks like a laptop, so there’s no reason that the Opera web browser wouldn’t allow all that slick Web 2.0 stuff, right? Watch Youtube videos from the toilet. Digg links from the comfort of the bed. Chat with 12-year-olds on Club Penguin. Oh wait.
We picked up the DS Opera Browser a little over a week ago and it was an emotional roller coaster ride for a while there. Time will ultimately tell how useful the $30 package is but so far it’s gone a bit like this:
Slooooooooooow loading and even slower scrolling. Formatting issues. Incomprehensible sites.
Oh, this is more like it. I see now. It’s not Web 2.0, it’s more like Web 0.5, like Web 2000. Bit of a shame about the incompatible bits.
I’ll go into more detail soon in a video post but this is the realization we’ve come to. Disheartening at first, once you find a few choice links most of the internet is within comfortable grasp. It’s sad that most of the luxuries of Web 2.0 are out of reach and that there’s not more customization in the interface (skins, background images, etc) but for a $30 internet crammed into the DS it works just well enough.
