♫ Coulda Been in: Katamari Damacy

Over the summer a youthful, college-bound co-worker of mine promised to make a mix CD for me. After much reminding and prodding he finally brought it in and since I’ve been fascinated by Sufjan Stevens. Or rather, one Sufjan Stevens song, “Come On! Feel The Illinoise!: Part I: The World’s Columbian Exposition/Part II: Carl Sandburg Visits Me In A Dream”. Uhh, yeah, that’s the title.

Not only is the song’s title fittingly bizarre, the track falls into a genre that — in my mind, if nowhere else — is concisely summed up as Katamari Damacy. Playful and bouncy with lyrics just as silly and whimsical as the game’s, the song mixes Stevens trademark piano with horns, strings, winds, electric guitar. It’s overwhelming at first but leaves me with the same misty-eyed smile as the game’s ecclectic and incredible soundtracks. Check it out.
