Mixed Messages from PETA’s Super Chick Sisters

A few months back PETA (the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) launched KentuckyFriedCruelty.com to bring awareness to the world about how KFC treats their food before it’s food. They also launched a new Flash game called Super Chick Sisters which — as you can see — is ripe with Nintendo love. Above, Mario and Luigi announce that they can’t save the world from animal cruelty because they’ve developed Wii-itis.

The Super Chick sisters (cute little chickens with red and green hats) step up to save the day and run through a Mario Bros.-esque game filled with everything from size-enhancing power-ups to hidden blocks that toss out hearts accompanied by a Legend of Zelda jingle. It’s a surprising Nintendo homage which makes its message of animal cruelty even more jarring. Characters reveal “fun facts” explaining how KFC debeaks its chickens while they’re still conscious as you dodge Col. Sanders spider robots and run past KFC logos with blood dripping out of the famous chicken bucket.

For me it’s more geeky homage to Nintendo than awareness… but I did remember that debeaking fact without loading up the game again. Hmm, I guess subliminal messages in gaming do work, though I was already boycotting KFC because of how horribly slow their service is.
